Does your teen have a personal laptop?

Anonymous
15yo DS is asking for a laptop for Christmas. He has a school issued laptop and we have a family computer (iMac) at home. Not sure he needs one. I'm guessing he'd use it mostly for YouTube and gaming. (We also have a PS5 and Switch.) I don't think he needs a MacBook for that. If your teen does have a personal laptop what do they have that's not a Mac?

Yes. Their school computers are garbage. They do homework work on their own laptops and just use the school ones in school.

- they have surfaces

Mine just has a Chromebook. Seems fine. She does her homework on it and plays basic games, watches YouTube, listens to music.

My son has a PC he built with his dad for Christmas several years ago. Monitors and various parts have been switched out so it's always kind of new?

He uses that for homework but also his Chromebook. When we travel he is welcome to use my MacBook.

Works great. I imagine as an adult he'll have a laptop for business and a PC for recreation.

This is OP. How is it for gaming?

That’s so cool! Maybe I’ll make DS do that. 😄

We held off until college, and for that we bought him a MacBook Air. He used the MCPS-issued chromebook successfully before that. My other kids are still in school, with those chromebooks - if there's a glitch, students can request technical assistance or parents can go to headquarters for a replacement. I've done both for my kids over the years they've had MCPS chromebooks.

They make every thing from a tablet with a detachable keyboard to full laptops. I'd think they'd be ok at the high end, but if you want a gaming laptop, there are specific versions made for gaming. Most off the shelf laptops can not handle the graphics for modern games.

No. We are a family of four (2 teens and 2 parents). We all have school/work issued devices and individual phones but share one laptop. It’s honestly a bit ridiculous and we are considering getting a second one because there is always competition for it. But we are going to get a second one for the family so it lives in a public place in the house.

Yes, we got laptops for both kids during virtual school (so they were in elementary). The school ipads were fine but most everything worked better on the laptops. I basically took over DS2's laptop and DS1 uses his regularly now in middle school.

Same with my kids. Not IMacs, but I have no idea what kind they have. Just whatever my husband was able to find a good deal on.
