Dog-Friendly Couches

What’s a good couch for a family with kids and a puppy?

If it were hard furniture I’d buy secondhand but with soft furniture, I’m not willing to risk it because of bedbugs.

Dark fabric. The cushions don't matter, the fabric does. We went to Room and board and picked out a dog/cat friendly fabric for a custom couch. It's held up very well in the past 4 years.

We did leather. Wipes clean, and you can buff scratches out if needed.

But I would also:

1) hold off on buying a new couch until your dog outgrows the puppy phase
2) train the puppy to stay off the couch

Not dark fabric if you have a light colored, shedding dog! We have a black Shepherd and a Golden/Shepherd mix. A tweed-like sofa has worked well. We got one of the kid and pet friendly fabrics from Ethan Allen. Overpriced but decent and held up well enough. I like room & board better and will do that next time.

If I’d had leather, I don’t think my dog would have done this, but he’s a licker (soothing mechanism) and he used to lick my microsuede sofa the same way he’d groom himself because it was soft. Gross. I bought a new sofa and he’s not allowed on it. Not all dogs do that, but leather would be easy to clean for general messes. If you don’t go leather, there are pet friendly fabrics that are more durable and supposedly easy to clean.

Leather all the way. The better the quality, the better it looks when it's inevitably scuffed up.

Dark is good for kids. I’d rather have white dog hair on a dark couch than the stains I’m sure my kids have caused. Ymmv

Leather. But not right away. Ours chewed our arm rests. Have to figure out how to patch it.

I bought a fully slip covered couch where I could remove and wash all the coverings. It is a Baldwin from Arhaus. I have washed many a cover over the last decade because of pets and kids. Just recently bought a whole new slipcover. It is great. Highly recommend.

Cleanable is the key. And a high rub score. So something with covers that zip off and wash, and an extractor for the parts that don’t (Bissell or similar).

But also, train your dog to stay off the couch. It’s worth it. If they are going on the couch you have to do some sort of blanket/pad for them.

Keep the dog off the couch.

LoveSac Sactionals with a Micro Velvet are great for kids and pets. The fur just wipes off the micro fabric. And everything can be removed and thrown in the wash. Our kid has spit up so many times on the couch and you’d never know.

Came here to recommend room and board. Tweed is especially forgiving of kids and dogs. After 5 years of toddlers and 2 large blonde dogs noticed some light wear. Spent 200 dollars to have it cleaned and it looks like it was just delivered. They have my loyalty.
