What restaurant dish did you have this year that was just delicious? Bonus points for casual, unexpected and not bank breaking... and for me, a close drive to DC.

Me, in no particular order:

- Huevos Rancheros at Guapos (Shirlington, VA)
- Gyro Big Greek Bowl from Big Greek Cafe (Silver Spring)
- Happy Santa roll from Momiji (DC)
- Shrimp Taco and crispy Brussel sprout side from Taco City II (Brookland, DC)
- Pork Wontons from Yoko and Kota at the Roost (Capitol Hill, DC)
- TBA from Bullfrog Bagel (H Street, DC and other locations)
- Baked Cavatelli Pasta and Burrata Appetizer at Caruso Grocery (Capitol Hill DC)
- Pear and Gorgonzola pasta at Mamma Lena Trattoria (Germantown MD)
- Chicken Wings from Federalist Pig (Adams Morgan DC)
- Shredded Brussels Sprouts Salad at RPM Italian (City Center, DC)

This might make all three categories -- casual, unexpected and not bank breaking: The Koshary Bowl at Fava Pot in Falls Church. Their menu describes it as "A hearty dish starring lentils, Egyptian rice, pasta, and a rich spicy tomato sauce, and topped with chickpeas and sweet caramelized onions."

Might be the best comfort food I've ever had. And it is $14.

Chewish Deli Asiago bagels (Alexandria)
Equinox tasting menu (DC)
Del Ray Pizzeria spinach salad (Alexandria)

M'saka at Lebanese Taverna. It's a slow roasted eggplant, chickpea garlicky stew to eat with bread. I dream about it.

My teen used to work at the swim school in the same mall and she and her friends were obsessed with Fava Pot, they went almost every night after their shift for dinner. I finally tried it and was amazed at how good it was. I've never had something I haven't loved.

How could you miss Los Hermanos Restaurant in Columbia Heights? Best Dominican and Puertorrican food around. It’s a secret gem among those who know.

OMG this is one of my absolute favorite dishes. We moved away from Falls Church this year and I really, really miss having Fava Pot in our take out rotation. All of their food is amazing and really lovely people.

Thank you for posting this! I used to love a similar dish during my grad school days — and didn’t know where I could find it locally. My efforts to recreate it on my own were woefully unsuccessful.
