| I am shopping for a used car. I live in Virginia. Any added hassle with buying a car in Maryland? |
| Not really. |
| Taxes |
You pay taxes where you register the car, not where you purchased. I’ve purchase most of my cars from out of state and just pay the taxes when registering in VA. |

We live in DC, bought a car from a dealership in MD. They facilitated all the tax payments to DC, the registration with the District, getting the temp and permanent tags, etc.
If you buy from a private seller, you'll need to do all of this yourself. You take possession of the car without any license plates and go straight to the VA DMV to get temporary tags and registration, pay taxes. Try to purchase the car on a weekday morning so you can head straight to the VA DMV. |
