| Villareal is posting that their U14 boys are #1 in the state and #7 in the U.S. Has anyone seen them play to vouch for that statement? Do they have any players that could potentially be playing on MLSNext teams? Is this small club a powerhouse or is this just coy marketing? |
| They are touting Got Soccer’s ranking which doesn’t include MLS Next teams and awards points only for select tournaments. Of course they aren’t the best team in the state or top ten in the country, which is laughable. But who cares let them have their moment. It’s like when a shop advertises “best coffee” based on a reader poll. People don’t take it literally but who cares if they do? |
| They are the best team in ECNL-RL by far and probably could “hang” with local ecnl/mls next teams. If only all local teams played each other… |
I don't think you can extrapolate to say the club is a powerhouse. Looking at the soccer rankings app that applies an algorithm to the wins/losses/goals scored/goals conceded, their top 2011s are 43rd in the state and their top 2009s are 17th in the state. The 2010 team is ranked 3rd in the state and 75th nationally. In VA, they're behind only SYC MLS Next and Loudon ECNL. I've seen them play a couple times. They're an excellent squad and I think they'd definitely be competitive at the top of ECNL and in the middle of MLS Next. They're a physically imposing team, one of the biggest I've seen at this age group, next to SYC. I think the rankings make sense as they recently lost a close match to Loudon. The 2010 SYC team has a fairly dominant set of players that I'd say is a step up from Villareal's, on the whole. I like the way Villareal plays as a team much better than SYC, though. They're organized and well-coached. They've got a lot to be proud of. (but not #7 in the country). |
| Yes, this team is one of the best U14 in VA. They can hang with ECNL easy. They would likely beat all the ECNL teams in our area. My DS isn't on the team but he has played against them many times and played with a few players who moved there in the last two years. They are defending their Super Y title in Florida as well. |
Agree, not #7, looking at soccer ranking app they play weak schedules. Jefferson is coming up, hopefully they are placed on higher bracket. |
#1 all categories, SYC MLS 2010 got no chance. score 6-2 |

Villa U14 is exceptionally big and fast, they look like a U16 team of strong athletes. They play well and play well together as a team.
A lot of the ECNL or MLS Next programs are more like a group of mercenaries with a large focus on competing with each other's teammates for a perceived place within the program. Many teams like Villa U14 play asa real team competing for each other. That is a real difference maker all other things being equal. |
| They lost 2/4 games at the Bethesda Tournament so I’m guessing they aren’t 7th in the state OR top 50 nationally. |

The gotsport rankings are an extremely rough guide.
Since the rankings are pay to play based, some teams are inflated based on number of games and tournaments paid for while some teams without a lot of tournaments are under ranked. Take them with a grain of salt of course. |
Also it doesn’t include games that don’t use gotsport like all ECNL and MLS Next league games. |
The GotSoccer rankings are complete garbage. Don't take them, with salt or otherwise. |
Beyond garbage and not even worth wasting a grain of salt. |
You mean carefully cherry-picking tournaments and brackets then using guest/guess players to generate points for higher rankings isn't legit stuff? |
