Boss and personal stories /brags

Anonymous
Have you been in the situation where your boss is so utterly tone deaf that s/he constantly talks about her personal things and expects you to be fascinated by her brags? Eg, their children, their weekends, their whatever, and it’s so utterly annoying? How can such people even be in leadership positions?

I had a boss tell me about his rental properties and how much money he had on our first get to know you lunch. He was actually one of the worst bosses I ever had.

Yes yes. At one job I knew everything about my boss’ kids and my boss had no idea of my kids names let alone things about them. I chalk it up to extreme self involvement. And I agree I have no idea how these people succeed.

I worked for tone deaf partners when I lived in South Florida (don't worry - I escaped). They would go around asking the secretaries if we had change for $100 for their lunch. Um no Peter, my paycheck bounced and your accounting guy is so stressed about getting us our money that he's had a heart attack, but I wish you all the best in getting your sushi.

You and your peers are the closest thing your boss has to friends. Not best practices.

This is exactly it. She has no clue about my kids, never even once asked. When after I had to waste 20 minutes of our call listening to her stories, I mention one tiny thing, she immediately cuts me off.

No one would be friends with a woman like that. These conversations are completely one-sided. When I rarely dare to mention one little thing, she immediately cuts me off.

I have one doing this right now. She's insecure and brags.

Way to miss the point that PP was making. We're telling you that such self-absorbed and socially clueless people have no friends - the employees are forced to act in lieu of friends.

Think of it as being paid to listen.

This is funny. And probably true.

DP. It's worse than that. This person is not the owner, or paying from her own pocket, which would be a bit easier to swallow.
She uses her position to torture and annoy and there is no way she doesn't know what she's doing.

Except that it cuts into my time of actually doing work. Which I then have to tack on at the end of the day.

^^ meant as a response to the “being paid to listen” poster.

Yessss. He loves to start his stories, one-sided of course, as I’m leaving for the day with one foot out the door. His stories on my time.
