I grew up in MoCo (and live here now) and we had field trips to the museums or various other DC/Maryland spots multiple times a year. We even went on a field trip to the recycling center! My 1st grader has had no trips this year. I think last year there were 2-3 with at least one in the fall. If you are in the DMV, how many FT has your elementary school aged child been on?
My third grader went to Green Meadows Petting Farm. I think my fifth grader went on a field trip without any parent chaperones. I actually took them on a little family field trip to a Smithsonian museum, just the three of us via metro. They asked if they could bring friends next time.
Last year my kid had no field trips at all, this year they’ve been on two already.
Our second grader, along with the rest of the second graders, went to Strathmore.
None at all in 3rs grade fairfax county. My son has only been on one field trip ever in elementary school, it was to the zoo in 2nd grade. None in K or 1st due to covid.
My second grader in DCPS has been on one. Last year they didn’t start until late Oct/early Nov, but then it was every six weeks until the end of June. Not sure if it will pick up or be a slower field trip year.
Even before Covid, our ES (in Loudoun) only took one per grade.
Field trips are a lot of extra work for teachers to plan. I work in a school and they are one of the only optional things that school staff can remove from their plates right now.
+1- We can’t control the kids in the schools, much less out of them. We don’t have cell IPads to keep the kids busy while they wait in line like they are used having when they go out with their parents. |
This. Last year, they went to the farm. |
We rarely had a field trip. Some years one, some none.
My kid in DCPS and had two field trips last year in K and has had two field trips so far this year
Our ES has no field trips AND no school events that parents are invited to. Schools and PTOs have become extremely lazy since Covid. Before anyone says anything, I would LOVE to join my kids PTO but they don’t have meetings that are open to the public. Not sure how I’m supposed to get involved if there aren’t any opportunities to do so??
Me again. Our school doesn’t even have a directory so the only way I was able to get in touch with other families to set up play dates is by sending a note and trusting my kid to give it to his friend. |
Field trips suck! They are a ton of work. Teachers have to do these enormous packets for the field trips. What time do we have to do them? I do not think people truly understand the work these packets entail.
