Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
| I had NO idea that I had to register my rising kindergartner for FCPS SACC an entire year+ prior to him even entering kindergarten. That would have been before we even decided to send him to FCPS Hollin Meadows. We're number 13 on the wait list. Does anyone have any alternative suggestions? I feel like I have an infant again, and am frantically looking for daycare. |
| Call the school and ask the secretary about other after-school program options. They should have a list of other programs (karate places, daycare centers, etc) that come to the school and pick up kids to transport them to their location. Also, they should have a list of local in-home daycare providers in the neighborhood around the school. GL! |
| How far down on the wait list? There will be some movement over the summer. |
| Sorry, I just saw. I wouldn't give up hope. Thirteen is not too bad. |
| You may have to start the school year with an alternative plan, but you should be able to get in shortly after school starts. I also think it depends on the school. I have heard that some have no waitlist, and you can put you child in anytime, while others (like mine) have a huge waitlist. I had to call last July to get my child in for this fall. I know...itis crazy! |
| Thanks for the advice everyone - this has been eye opening! |

Don't mean to hi-jack this thread but I called today about Waynewood right when they opened and we are #49 on the list. They said we had a 75% chance of getting in....does this mean that the program is full and there are 48 people ahead of us trying to get a spot that opens....or does this mean that they put everyone on the wait list and that we are the 49th person on that list and will probably get a spot?
I plan to follow up but don't want to do that today because the phone lines are so jammed. Thanks |
I'm not sure how those are different. I would take it to mean there are 48 people ahead of you. However, I have learned it is not always that simple. There is a priority wait list for SACC. If someone who is already in SACC at another school transfers to your school, they will move to the top of the waitlist. IME, there will be a lot of movement at the end of August when the first monthly SACC payment is due. There is also sometimes movement in September as people tweak their after school care needs. After that, there is little movement again until January. But the SACC program there must be really big if you are 49th and they expect you to get in at this point! Last year, we were #17 in August, went to #8 in September, and then stayed there until January, when we got in. |
Yes, the program is full. I called last July for this coming fall, and I was 163 on the waitlist. I just got in this past June for this September. If I didn't know to call that far in advance, my chances of getting what I needed would be 0%. I needed everything...before school, kindergarten, and after school. In addition, as a pp said, priority is given to kids already in the program and siblings. I really hope you get in! |
Thank you. I am glad I called today for Sept 2011! It's a crazy process. |
| We were waitlisted for our elementary school - when I called last May we were 21. I just received a call on Friday to let me know that a space has opened up if we want it. We will actually be forfeiting it as we found another option that is the same cost and a 2-minute bus ride, with a lot of extra activities for our DD (swimming, dance, music lessons, etc.). I did not expect to ever get a spot this year but it did happen, so don't rule it out. I wold call again next week and check the status as they are weeding through lists at this time of year to confirm spots. |
