Do you send out holiday/new year cards?

Anonymous
Just placed our order but have received considerably fewer so far this December than prior years. Leads me to wonder if the tradition is dying off.

Do you still send them? Do you mass mail them (like through Shutterfly or InkCards) or do you hand write notes?

I sent ours today.the tradition is definitely dying out (or practically dead) but I still enjoy doing it.

I write notes on most of ours. And I address by hand, I like to do it. We don’t send that many.

Yes, we send them. We sign our names (and the dog's name) by hand. It's a collage of pics with a little message.

No. Years ago I realized how stressful the holidays had become because of all these types of tasks. I removed everything nonessential to my family enjoying the holiday and it got much better.

Truth be told, I don’t even look at the ones I get. They’re about as interesting as junk mail to me.

Yikes, I would hate if someone actually viewed my family’s Christmas card as interesting as “junk mail.” 😟

send them if it makes you happy. You can’t control how other people feel.

I love getting them, and I used to love sending the family card. But it began to seem strange and impersonal to just send a mass produced card with pictures of ourselves to everyone.

So now I just send boxed cards from Target or CVS to people close to me with a handwritten note. Cheaper and more sincere.

I like all the cards we get regardless, but when someone sends an unsigned picture card from Shutterfly where the computer even generated the address, it’s a little like receiving a Facebook post in the mail. Not very heartfelt. The card is not about the recipient in that case, but the sender.

I still send them. I used to stress about the timing of when they went out, but now I just mail them when I have time at some point btwn Thanksgiving and new years. I love getting cards from friends—some I haven’t seen or talked with in years—and somehow a card feels more meaningful than seeing a post on social media. I do think the tradition is drying out but I’m holding onto it.

I send them and love getting them. I don’t bother sending to people I know don’t care about cards. I send about 40 and usually receive about 30.

I send photo cards but always write a note on each one before sending. I’ve noticed all that I receive are unsigned photo cards.

Is there a tradition that is replacing the photo holiday card?

This is the first holiday season in 19 years that we are not sending out photo cards. I have such mixed emotions! On one hand, it is like this major deadline has been lifted and it really is so freeing, never mind the cost that we are not spending (had been sending out a lot of cards). But then as holiday greetings start coming in, I do feel a little pang ...

No, another junk mail opinion here. If I have friends, they keep in touch all year. If I never hear from you, I don’t really care about your card. Impersonal and a waste. It’s like social media on paper.

Is this an American thing? None of my European family and friends do this either.

You have no friends, we get it.
