Disney Cruise for Spring Break- I hate cruises

Anonymous
My In-Laws somehow managed to score 15 ticket for a big family cruise that coincides with my kids spring break. They are known for incredibly thoughtful and extravagant gifts. Thankfully they’re also good about asking us before presenting the gifts to the kids.

It does sound like a great experience. It would be DHs entire side and we all get along great. The kids adore their cousins and would truly have a blast.

What’s holding us back? I have a horrible phobia of cruise ships. I went on one cruise when I was 22 and it was hell on earth. I’ll spare you the details but I ended up so terribly sick I had to be hospitalized and almost didn’t graduate on time. Since then I’ve had a fear of any boat, but especially cruise ships. I know many people will tell me to get over it but the fear runs deep and I’m already sweating thinking about it. I’m also not comfortable having my kids go without me (even if DH attends). Yes, I’m generally a very anxious person.

I feel terrible turning it down. We probably won’t, but I don’t want to be a mess worrying about it for the next 3.5 months. Would you just do it? Has anyone been on one? If you aren’t a cruise person what are your thoughts?

How old are your kids? Is your DH generally responsible with them? I don’t like cruises either but I wouldn’t deprive my kids of a fun family trip.

5 and 7-year-old twins. It’s a lot for one parent. DH is responsible but easily distracted. Worried about them getting lost or god forbid falling off balcony in one of the rooms.

I would be the same way. FWIW, a Disney cruise is probably going to be the best cruise option out there. If I was going to go on a cruise (ugh) it would be a Disney cruise.

OP, I hear you. I hate cruises. I was shocked at how much I enjoyed the Disney Cruise. You'll be surprised.

I hate cruises and I hate Disney, but the Disney cruise we did was totally fine. Not like a magical experience at least for me, but also not traumatic at all. I had kids too young to enjoy it (two years old) but my family who went with kids who were older absolutely loved it.

Is there any way one child would be willing to stay home with you, preferably the child most likely to end up falling off a balcony? Would that make things easier and safer for DH to go without you? Perhaps you could plan some special staycation outing for the kid who stays.

This doesn’t sound like a fun vacation for you, OP.

Nooo don’t deprive that poor child of an amazing experience because you have anxiety!

I would go- and in the meantime work with a therapist

A friend got bedbugs on a Disney cruise.

I think this would cause so many issues. It would be my youngest, but she’d be very upset. I think I’m just going to deal. It’s 5 days.

I am still a person despite being a wife and mother. A person with real fears. I’m sorry that’s hard for you to understand.

What ship did you get sick on, and where?

I would send the kids with the rest of the family and stay home. They can be in the kids club all day, no need for husband to supervise.
