Karla Silvestre was reelected unanimously to serve as Montgomery County Public Schools Board of Education (BOE) president Tuesday morning.

By a vote of five to three, Board Member Lynne Harris was chosen as vice president over Board Member Julie Yang. Harris succeeds Board Member Shebra Evans.

Silvestre thanked BOE members for their support, noting, “I’ve really learned from each and every one of you. Together we are better.”

In accepting their positions, neither Silvestre or Harris addressed some of the more controversial items that have plagued the board:

Neither McKnight nor Silvestre referred to objections to its opt out policy when books mentioning LGBT!+ are read and discussed; the recently released Inspector General’s report detailing the results of their investigation into the conduct of Dr. Joel Beidleman while he was principal at Farquhar Middle School; nor the increase in hate-based incidents throughout the district.

So if you like the direction the school board has been heading in, good news! We're getting more of the same! This is especially noticeable with the board doubling down on Lynne Harris who has been at the center of offending the muslim/Ethiopian communities with her comments and position on the opt-out for LGBT ELA books.

It’s encouraging about Lynne—I have talked to her and she did not seem to have drunk the central office Kool-Aid.

I'd rather they focus on educating kids than these drama items.

They are two of the better people on the BOE.

I am glad Shebra Evans is no longer VP. She was completely useless in that role.

Agree! Lynn ask thoughtful questions and isn’t afraid to bring up controversial topics.

All Shebra does is pat herself and the board on the back when she steps to the mic. It's painful to watch.

It's heartening to know they are standing firm against this awful bigotry wrapped in religion.

+1. This whole LGBT ELA book controversy is an opportunity for Lynne Harris (and everyone else) to virtue signal at the expense of our kids' education.

Who's "we"? Many of us are LGBTQ and/or have family members or other loved ones who are LGBTQ, and believe that yes, it is actually a virtue to have us/our family/our loved ones represented in books that are included in the ELA curriculum.

My kid is queer, needs and deserves to see people like themselves in books at school, and that is directly relevant to my kid's education. So: you're wrong.
