Private school parent small talk in December: EVERYONE bragging about upcoming ritzy trips

Anonymous
Except us. We aren't poor but you can't help but feel a little on the prole side of upper middle class this time of year when you have to disclose, "No, no big trips. We're just staying home." It feels like every single private school parent you bump into is itching to sort of brag about and detail their vacation home or their upcoming ski trip or some ritzy beach destination. Anyone else feel this way this time of year?

Response to your family staying home is always something like, "Oh. That's lovely. Very traditional." Stings a little.

Just say you don't travel this time of year.

Who cares?

You chose private school that’s on you.

I’m very very well off and I would never it’s a choice deal with it.

Thankfully, DD is in the Nutcracker so we can't travel, but I hear you.

LOL. This. This is what you say to the other parents. Humble brag it...

Maybe you should hang out with some real proles so you have a better sense of your own wealth.

No. But I’m not jealous or insecure. We have the money to do something, we just choose not to. Maybe that makes it easier? I really like hearing about trips because I find it interesting. I don’t assume people are bragging, but making conversation.

I used to feel this way but I also think it’s just assumed that everyone can afford to travel somewhere. So it’s making small talk and also sharing tips on where to go and where to stay. That said yes you also get the people who really make a big deal and drop it into totally unrelated conversations.

Same. But I'm also the type that enjoys seeing everyone's get togethers and vacations or events on SM and I've found that's uncommon on this forum.

I think it’s normal for people to ask what you are doing for the holidays. What else are you going to ask about? We will be traveling, but I don’t boast about it

It would bother me more if I didn't mind traveling during the holidays. I HATE it and we are happy to stay home.

I know my kids are only in elementary and I’m sure it changes as they get older, but I don’t feel this way at all, and we’re staying put.
