Maryland's budget cuts

This isn't good at all...state-provided services will become more expensive, fees will increase, and the transportation infrastructure will suffer. We will even see more litter on the roads. What effect do you think will this have on property taxes?

The six-year plan, expected to be announced next week, calls for an 8 percent cut in the annual budgets of the state’s highway, transit, ports and airports agencies, along with the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA). Construction budgets at most of the agencies would face even deeper cuts, according to the summary, parts of which were obtained by The Washington Post.

Maryland faces an across-the-board budget crunch caused by lackluster economic conditions and the expense of key policy goals. But the outlook is worse for transportation projects scheduled to begin in several years, partly because of rising construction costs and declining revenue streams dedicated to paying for them

Unfortunately, Maryland a small state, has multiple large poverty-filled population centers that affluent people do not want to move to. They take their money to Virginia, Pennsylvania, and other states. Litter strewn roads doesn't help, people will drive past those to live somewhere else.

The first-time politician, who began his career as an investment banker, ran through bleak economic data that shows Maryland residents are losing earning power compared to their neighbors — while New Jersey families saw personal incomes rise by $1,700 last year, those in Maryland saw only $1,000, he said, in a speech that alternated between soaring tones about the state’s potential and sober ones about its present.

Maryland is one the wealthiest states. It’s also small with fewer road miles to maintain.

Maryland actually isn't wealthy, that is the problem. It can't bring in the scale of tax revenue that other states can and Maryland has an ambitious plan to bring its poor population out of poverty.

It's at or near the top in income and in the top half for GDP. Maybe their ambition is bigger than their pocketbook but it's not a poor state

It’s not just Maryland with filthy roads. We got it in NOVA too. It’s sad how many people just don’t care about littering. Retirees in our neighborhood though will head to high traffic roads (not interstates) with vests, buckets, and pickers and clean up trash once a month or so along the roadside. That’s nice to see.
I would love it if people sentenced to community service would be put on this kind of duty.
Our parish cleans up a nearby creek a few times a year. The first time we did it we filled up ten pick-up truck beds with litter.

Can’t attract taxpaying businesses without investment in infrastructure. Private companies will continue to locate in VA.

Maryland spent time and resources to land the FBI which will pay nothing in state taxes, and now they aren’t willing to invest in transit or roads to help those employees reach the site.

It's not doing it right. It is creating safety net after safety net without investing in jobs/businesses that will provide the economic ladder for people to actually move up. I'm not against safety nets. I'm against "only" safety nets.

MoCo which is one of MD's biggest revenue generators is run by socialists who hate business with over 10 employees. While they are in charge, MoCo will, one again, become little more than a bedroom community for NoVa and DC.

Don't be fooled by this ploy. They're looking to raise taxes so that they can pay for their way-too-expensive Kirwan plan, which is basically just dumping more money into schools with no oversight or accountability.

+1. It’s Thornton 2.0. What did that get us?

Are these actual cuts, or just reductions in already-proposed spending increases?

It’s #1 in the United States for household wealth.

They need to cut. Spending is out of control for a small state with less area to cover. Cutting is the sign of fiscal responsibility
