What types of things do students at Top 25/Ivy Plus Schools do during the summer after Freshman year to build their resumes? I'm sensing that the only kids who get internships that early are nepo kids.

We are going to do some intensive foreign language study, both at Middlebury and abroad.

Mine went to work as a camp counselor at the summer camp he used to attend.

My first got an internship through a friend. My 2nd will go back to being a camp counselor.

DD got a paid internship in her field through GMU. DS got an unpaid think tank position through UVA. Neither were Nepo internships. Tell your kid to go to the college career counseling office and also work faculty connections

If you live in DC, sign up for the Summer Youth employment program in February. There are actually a decent number of true "internship" employers, including Accenture and some local IT/Defense companies.

It's a decent option if trying to do more than just be a camp counselor or waitstaff.

My DC got a paid internship with a Fortune 100. Applied like crazy to 60 jobs. It came through in April. Not nepo.

My dd goes to Michigan and got a paid internship through college career center. Not nepo but did have prior research experience in high school and college.

Mine had a congressional internship with our locks congressmen. No relation or connections.

Mine had a paid summer internship at the University with a specific program that she was really interested in. She kind of couldn’t believe she got paid to do it, but these schools have a ton of money and grant based opportunities if you start poking around

Have a paid federal internship lined up. Applied online. No connections. Didn't use career center.
