Infertility Support and Discussion
| Would you know immediately if you had it? My understanding is that this complication is very rare in older women (40+). Is this true? Thanks! |
| I had it. It hit me hard two days after I got a positive pregnancy test, and I ended up having a very severe case of OHSS (b/c I am pregnant with twins and was very hyperstimulated). I have heard it is rare in older women as well. The 3 major risk factors are being young, if you produce a lot of eggs and are thin - I happen to be all 3 of those things. I hope you do not get it! |
| I had it on my 40th birthday -- which led them to do the beta test early, which was positive. |
| I did have it quite severely with my second IVF cycle at age 31. Now I'm 36 going for #2 and though we'll watch for it, my RE did say that it is much, much less likely to happen with each passing year, especially after 35. But, it can happen and does, so if you have any questions, call your RE now. |

Had some form of hyperstim for all my stims (2 IUIs, 3 IVFs).
My symptoms were so bad on my 3rd IVF, that we canceled the transfer and opted for a FET a month or so later. We think (my RE and I) that the hyperstim may have been the reason for some unsuccessful cycles in the past. All cycles were done after the age of 40. The one where we canceled the transfer was after an egg retrieval the day prior to my 42nd birthday. So it CAN happen with us 'older' women. |

I went through 5 IUI when I was 32-34 yrs old
Had my first IVF when I was 34. I have mild OHSS with my IVF, I felt like it took a week to get over my egg retrieval, was very low energy, wanted to stay on bedrest all the time, my belly was swollen and I looked like I was pregnant already. Like I said, started feeling better a week after retrieval, then I started feeling WORSE at two weeks after egg retrieval: major abdominal pains, never felt anything like it and wanted to go to the er. Went to the clinic, they said it was MILD OHSS, go home, drink gatorade, not enough fluid in my ovaries to drain them again. Turned out I was pregnant and that's why the symptoms got worse after they got better, and eventually everything went away, except the baby.
Good luck and baby dust to you all. |
