Private to public - how bad is this?

Anonymous
Possibly moving to Ft. McNair for a year. Kids are in private now, but we can't afford that in DC. DH's colleagues have said we should avoid DCPS, but I don't think we have a choice. Are they just being racist and classist?

There are somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 DCPS elementary schools. How could they possibly know all of DCPS?

DCPS as an institution is dysfunctional. But there are still some good schools and even more excellent teachers.

If they’re in elementary, you can definitely find some excellent dcps schools. You can also fine well priced parochial schools

These are people who've lived within walking distance, where we would be. I don't know what school specifically, but they do. It's middle and high school, for whatever that's worth.

Looks like it would be Eastern HS?

You need to read and become familiar with this policy:
https://dcps.dc.gov/page/enrollment-students-military-families
You have a lot of options

Thanks, I'm familiar. But location and commute time matters, since I work (remote, but have set, inflexible hours), so I'm afraid we're limited to the closest school.

Then mention the darn school. No one can help you if you're asking about "DCPS" as a whole.

I don't know! I think it's Eastern HS. I've never lived anywhere with more than one high school, so I'm not sure how to tell, but that's what Zillow says.

Do you have to live on base? Live in the VA or MD suburbs and go to school there.
Anonymous
Call the # in the policy and ask about busing. I thought (it might be dated) that there were buses from the base to schools.

Thanks. So it's Jefferson Middle School Academy and Eastern High School.

This is off-base, but DH insists on walking distance.
