Need to find a person to stay with my teen and dog while we go away

Anonymous
The teen is a senior in high school but she can't drive and the dog needs someone around to take care of him most of the time. It's just for about a week. Any suggestions about where to look? A grad student would be ideal.

Thanks!

Your teen is going to be on their own in a few months. They don’t need a caretaker. Hire a dogwalker.

You want to hire a grad student to stay in the house with your teen for a week?

Grandparent? Older cousin? You could just put Uber on your teens phone and hire a dog walker for the week.

Why can’t your teen take care of the dog if they will be home?

Hire a pet sitter for the time your kid is in school. Have your kid ask a friend for a ride or ask the school about taking the bus for the week.

That is crazy. I stayed by myself for a week a couple of times when I was that age. I would have been so offended if my family tried to hire me a baby sitter.

We just had to do that for the weekend and we asked for a friend and his older brother to stay at our place. We stuffed the fridge and they had an unlimited access to Doordash and Ubereats. DS walked the dog but at least he had someone to stay at the house overnight. It was an emergency trip we had to make. DS and his friend are 13, older brother is 21.

When I was a senior in HS my father had a medical emergency and my mother wanted to stay with him in the hospital because she didn't feel he was getting good care. I was newly 17, and was allowed to drive home but otherwise not take the car anywhere. I got the bus to and from school, and otherwise asked neighbors for rides (I think twice) locally and invited friends over one at a time (meaning, not a party). I was totally fine for a week. Kinda proud of myself to be honest.

And, my mother called my school and told the AP what was going on and he pulled me aside throughout the week to check how I was doing, and he also told my favorite teacher who did the same.

Have your kid stay with a friend or relative.

Hire a house/dog sitter.

I suggest you re-think this. Your kid should be just fine, they can take use the bus/train/uber/friends to get around. Hire a dog walker.

OP you're not going to get any useful advice without clarifying why your 17-18 yr old can't stay home for a week by themselves. Everyone's already suggested a dog walker, but why does your young person need someone to be with them at night? Not asking from a judgemental place, but most of us were fine alone when that age, so we're asking so we can be helpful: why do you need someone to watch your senior in high school for a week?

I’m so confused why you would pay a dog walker if you have an ambulatory senior in high school?!

I don't know about OP, but my kid was up and out the door by 7 am and then had activities after school and often didn't get home until after 5. Unless your dog is used to being left alone for 10 hours a day, I wouldn't test it out when my kid is home alone with the dog for a week.
