| Seems gimmicky. |
| How much do you about the Catholic community in DC and Montgomery County? I’m guessing you are not a native. |
|
Anti-Visi troll alert.
How many posters will bite? |
|
There’s a Prep network, a Gonzaga network, a St John’s network. Why wouldn’t there also be a Visi network of alums and supporters who help one another.
Since our son went to Gonzaga shortly after we moved here, we haven’t seen a professional (doctor, dentist, orthodontist, lawyer, accountant or real estate person) that wasn’t somehow connected to Gonzaga. We have been referred to these people and welcomed by them as part of the Gonzaga family. |
I've only been here 20 years but I guess that's not enough. Forgive me if it's my FIRST time having a 14 year old applying to private high schools. |
On the contrary, twenty years seems like enough time to have actually met people who went to Visi and ask them this question. If you haven't, then don't choose Visi for that reason in particular. Choose it because your daughter likes it and thinks she will get a good education there. |
Ok, well I haven't. They must not hang out in the lower echelons of society. |
Where did you hear of this network? |
| In the school's marketing/visits. |
No, they are in pretty much all echelons of society. But they are all bound together by their association with their schools, their parishes, their clubs and even their neighborhoods. It’s criticized by some as being insular. But the members of the community are quite happy with their world as it exists. It’s completely possible for your kids to go to one of these Catholic schools or to be in a parish and not be a part of it. But this is the core of the “network” you have heard about. Many feel a strong allegiance to the school and to the rest of the alumni group. If you daughter goes to Visi it’s possible she can be part of the “network” and possibly helped by it. |
Like all the other schools. Why gimmicky? |
|
Why wouldn't it be? What are you asking exactly? For jobs, introducing spouses, starting a business, selling real estate, etc?? It's a tight knit group for sure but please elaborate. Are you insinuating Visi girls are more loyal to each other than say girls from NCS? Not all private school networks are the same. I've been in DC for years and both SILs and relatives have gone to Visi- various years throughout the 90s and 2000s, and a handful of us went to Hilton & some other Big 3s. There are pros of all of these networks as well as different characteristics. |
Well, there’s no way to compare the strengths of networks. But, frequently, there’s alot to bind the Visi girls together. There’s the common religion and Catholic culture. There’s the experience of attending grammar school together and possibly membership in the same parishes. There frequently are family connections to these schools. And, as I’m sure you are aware, the different groups in the area do tend to gravitate to the same activities, clubs, etc. I wouldn’t think there are many Holton alumni in those gyms on a Saturday night as Blessed Sacrament battles it out with Holy Redeemer in CYO basketball. |
| Good point -- Holton alumnae aren't sending their kids to those turd schools |
|
I would not spend much time on pursuing Visi. Mostly children of alumni get accepted.
I mean, go ahead and try. Why not? |
