ECNL GK spots

My DD, U12, is a GK at a club that doesn't have an ECNL team. She really likes playing the position and she's good. Do all of the local ECNL clubs already know who their GKs are for next year (2024-2025, when she's a U13) or is it worth it for her to try out with a few of the clubs?

You should definitely take her to tryout at places. Rosters are not set.

They have GKs on their roster of course but if a better one comes along, no one is turning that player away. Go to practices and impress!

Almost every girls ECNL club is constantly on the lookout for good goalies to add to their teams/club - whether that's to replace an existing goalie, act as a backup or to share time with another existing goalie. There just aren't that many high-quality female goalies out there unfortunately. So, if she's good enough, she'll definitely get a look and probably an offer somewhere. Just make sure you understand what the "arrangement" is before you accept someone's offer to switch teams/clubs. Is it to become the clear ECNL team starter, a backup or to share time? And, if it's to share time, make sure you're comfortable with how that's going to work. Some teams will carry two full-time goalies and have them literally split time for each game. Some will carry two goalies but have a clear #1 and #2 and the time split will not be even. Others will have goalies share time between their top ECNL teams and their #2 teams (so you could rotate between two different teams at the same club each week). There can be a lot of bait and switch type promises going on to get you to make the initial move. So, you just want to make sure you understand and are comfortable with the arrangement and trust that the club is being upfront with you.

If you are a goalie parent, you really should know all top keepers in the area. Not that hard to follow. Like pp said, all clubs will gladly look to add a solid keeper, but make certain you know what you are getting into. Starter or backup? Playing time? We have three rostered on our team and only 1 is happy.

Thanks for the replies, we'll be visiting some clubs in the new year. While we have seen some other keepers in the area, there are a few different leagues for our age, so haven't seen them all. Definitely concerned about play time offered wherever she ends up, and will keep that in mind.

I have some insight into the 2012s and goalies are absolutely in demand including at ECNL clubs. There’s some good ones already, and everyone’s advice so far is sound to know what situation you’re getting yourself into.

Is the situation the same for boys ?

Absolutely, always a demand for good goalies, especially at U-13+ age groups. That said, u obviously have to better than the club’s current goalie!

Any insight into the GK situation for the 2011 girls goalies?

A lot of the 2011 ECNL teams have one goalie and will look to add a second goalie at U14/15. I think VDA and Union are examples of 2011 teams with one goalie but all their older teams have 2 goalies.
