Our DC has been daytime potty-trained since two-and-a-half; she's now three and a quarter. She still naps each day, and does so without a diaper, just using the potty before she naps.
But I'm unclear how she gets nighttime potty-trained from here. Pretty much each morning, she wakes up with a wet overnight diaper. Oh Crap talks about waking the kiddo up in the middle of the night to prompt them to use the potty, but we'd rather not do that. How did this work with your kids? How did they get to a place where they wake up of their own accord in the middle of the night, if they need to go, or otherwise hold it? We are in no hurry for her to stop using the overnight diaper, but just wondering whether we should be doing anything to prepare her for transition. Thanks! |
They just stopped. Once I realized that the pull ups they were taking off in the morning had been dry for a while, I had them sleep with no bottoms for a while, and when that was dry, we went to pjs without pull ups.
I had them use the potty when they brushed their teeth from the point they were potty trained, but I'm not sure that prepared them for anything. Their bodies just weren't ready and then they were. For my kids it happened when they were 3, for other kids in the family it happened later, it didn't seem to align with any other skills, or how early they day trained, or anything, their body just figured it out. |
If she’s wet every morning she’s not ready. My kid was also day trained at 2.5 but night time was years later. She was and still is a very deep sleeper. I tried all the suggested methods, alarm, taking to pee at midnight, limited liquids, rewards etc… nothing worked until her body was ready. She was a late bedwetter but stopped entirely around 7.5. |
OP here-- very helpful, thanks! |
What others have said. And understand they may occasionally have nighttime accidents years later when going through big developmental changes. Our 7 year old randomly had a few wet nights over the summer. None since. She was 4 when finally out of pull ups - they had been dry for awhile but she preferred wearing them longer jic. We let her decide. |
My kid was also day trained fully around 2.5. When she was about 3, I started insist she go to the bathroom right before bed and immediately on waking up and kind of mentioning it would be good for her to wake up dry (her pull-up had been dry in the morning like twice; other times it was really full but I suspected she was peeing after she woke up in the morning most of the time). A couple weeks later she woke dry every morning for a week so I let her try going to bed without a diaper. She’s peed twice in the middle of the night since then, both times when she’s been sick.
So I’m solidly team it’ll happen when they’re ready but I will add that you can tell your child it’s a goal if you suspect they might be ready now and just not realize you wood like to stop buying diapers actually. |
We potty trained at 30 months. Shortly thereafter she just started waking up in the middle of the night once to pee. It sucks bc she wants our help, but she also hasn’t had any accidents yet. She’s almost 4. Never used pull ups. We did nothing to influence this. |
Both my kids needed night time pull-ups until a little past 4 (both boys). Eventually I started noticing that they were starting to wake up dry and go pee shortly after waking, so I started keeping track and said that after 3 weeks of no night peeing they could wear underpants to bed and then that was that. My younger one is newly in underpants at night but has done well so far and my older one is now 8. I don’t know if there is much you can do to help this along especially if the night peeing is happening in the middle of the night. Do take them to the bathroom right before bed and first thing in the morning when they wake up though. |
My kids also potty trained at 2.5. We kept them in night time pull ups until they were nearly 5! Ok, maybe 4.5, but I wasn't about to change sheets in the middle of the night or wake them up or anything like that. We both work full-time and no kid goes to college with pull ups so I wasn't worried about it. The doctor asked at one of the check ups if they were night trained and I mentioned that the pull-up was soaked in the morning. She suggested we take it off and for an experiment we did. The kids were dry ever since. It was like the pull-up gave them the excuse to wet at night. I have no idea what it would have been like to actually try to train them. |
I have 3 kids who potty trained for day and night simutaneously. So, they were dry at night as soon as they trained.
But one kid, she had accidents at night occasionally till about 6. Dr said it was an immature bladder (we checked for uti and kidney stuff) and that she would grow out of it. I didn't do any special night training. She wanted to be dry at night-I never shamed her or woke her up in the middle of the night. Once she went about a week with no accidents, she was excited to try without the pullups, and had maybe one or 2 accidents and that was it! |
My nearly 8yo is still wet in the am. Pediatrician says this is normal. |
Potty trained for day at 2y 3 mo. At 2.75 years son just stopped waking up wet one day. He never peed at night again after that. Previously his diaper was soaked or leaking upon wake-up. After a couple weeks of dry wakeups I switched him to underwear at night and that was that. |
Daughter potty trained at 2.5, one day told me she wanted to wear underwear and that was it. Was not try for overnight until almost 7, tried many different things. She just needed time.
Second child, son, hard to potty train, around 3.5 was finally potty trained. I noticed he also dry at night and stopped putting night diaper within the same week. Didn’t do anything special. Each child is different, sometimes they are not ready. Don’t worry they will eventually get there. Goo luck, |
She will stop on her own. I have 3 kids that all potty trained before or at 2. DD1 stopped wearing a night time diaper at 3.5. DD2 stopped wearing a diaper at 6. DS stopped wearing a diaper at night right after he was potty trained so at 2 and a few months (he was super early). |
My final trick was to put the underwear on them first and then place an oversized pull-up on top of the undies. This way if the child peed at night, they would feel it. But, the bed sheets were spared. The child usually doesn’t like the wet feeling so they eventually stop peeing at night. |
