Anonymous
Question from a TJ parent. DD is a junior and so far has taken 3 APs. a lot of posts I am reading mention kids taking 6-7 APs by junior year. Can you please explain how !

3 APs including current classes? Or took 3 APs by end of sophomore year?

The users commented on AP/Post-AP (or AV). Are you counting the AV's? Also like the PP mentioned it was by end of Junior year and that too for the top 10% of the kids.

OP here. Year 1 no AP allowed, Sophomore year only 1 AP allowed took that. Junior year 2 APs taken

Some TJ kids enter in very high math and are able to take Calc freshman or sophomore year. Some also double up on science sophomore year and beyond (concurrent Chem and AP Bio). Some kids don’t have to take a language during the year perhaps because they place out (speak language at home) so that opens up another elective spot for an AP class (or post AP class) or a prerequisite to an AP class.

What APs has your child taken/currently taking?

Also will be interesting to know if they count some AP's as 2 (e.g. AP Micro/Macro has 2 AP exams, and so does the AP Physics I think). Also, Physics is a honors course but some kids take the AP exam for Physics 1. Do they count it too?

Same with AV courses with 1/2 credits (semester courses). Do they count as 1 or 1/2 ?

I think of a year long course as one AP regardless of how many AP exams are associated with the course. At FCPS base schools I believe all AP classes are enrolled as year long course including AP statistics. So at TJ if they are in a semester post AP class I’d consider it 1/2 course when counting the number of AP and AV (post AP classes) but who knows how the kid/parent is counting when they say their kid took 9-10 AP/AV by end of junior year.

Number of AP courses taken can be different than number of AP exams taken. I think colleges care about your transcript, courses taken and grades earned. Of course, AP exam score can be another data point if a student chooses to include it.

When one of my kids was at the Blair STEM magnet in MCPS, they got 5's on 8 AP tests, butthey only took 6 actual AP courses when they were there. Blair isn't an AP focused program so I guess it differs from TJ.
