I hate 50/50 raffles where…

…the winner donates their winnings to the cause. Do people really not play to WIN? Is this some unwritten rule I’m unaware of? Is it selfish to play and then keep the money if you win?

The winner of a baby shower I went to yesterday donated nearly $500 to the baby.

At our street’s block party this summer, the winner donated nearly $1000 in winnings to next year’s party.

Every year at our private school’s silent auction, the winnings are donated back.

It would be one thing if the “cause” of the 50/50 wasn’t already getting 50%. So what’s up with this?

They don’t need the money. I’ve donated winnings from 50/50 raffles before.

Can you just not play?

I think you need to go into these things knowing they're just an activity meant to support the subject of the event. Then it will sting less when people tell you you can't keep your winnings!

Someone had a 50/50 raffle at a baby shower?? How tacky.

Who the hell is doing a 50:50 raffle at a baby shower??? Omg

Agree. It’s dumb and when I won one, I donated 10% of my portion and kept the rest.

If I win a 50/50 raffle that supports any of. Y kids activities, school or some other kids’ activity, I’m keeping 100%. If it’s one of my kids’ activities or school, it’ll be going back to them anyway in the form of fees.

Who does a 50/50 at a baby shower?

Op I've seen more and more people donating their half. I don't understand it.

Why wouldn’t you? I get if you can’t feed your kids or buy gas. If you need the money fine, but it’s not gonna change your life, I would donate it.

That being said, I think a 50-50 at a bridal or baby shower is beyond tacky.

These all sound incredibly tacky. Who does a raffle at a baby shower or block party?

A friend won 4k at a charity 50:50 and kept it. The auction committee talked crap about her for years.

Got laid off from non-profit job. They asked me to donate my severance back to them.

How about...no.

Keep the money, OP. If they want to pass around a collection plate, call it a collection plate. I wouldn't donate my winnings either.
