Give total dollar amount / purchase price / length of time you’ve lived there.
Not including taxes. |
| Why does this matter? |
Trying to understand what is a reasonable amount. |
| About $150k, we bought for $412k 17 years ago. Row house in DC. It’s probably worth right around a million now. |
Wow! What did you spend the money on that increased the value so much? Or is it just the location? |
|
We bought for 420k almost 20 years ago.
We’ve put in 275k. I think it’s worth around 850k right now. |
Just the location, mostly. We’re on the Hill, in a part that was less popular when we bought. But we also dug out our basement, so we increased our living space by 50 percent. House is so much more livable now. |
But what is reasonable depends on several factors, at least. More context of your situation would be good. |
That’s a lot! What did you spend it on? |
|
Rowhouse bought 4 years ago, property value has increased about 15% since we bought.
Total home improvement $ is about 17k. That includes new HVAC, sump pump, and a few little odds and ends. |

Bought in 2020
Home price: $1.21M Renovation: $200K Maintenance since purchase: $60K-$70K Current value: $2.5M |
$17K is very little for those things combined. |
| How are you paying $60-70K in maintenance? |
I assume you're addressing this to me. The maintenance is not required, rather it's optional. Things like refinishing the deck. Painting the outside of the house. This is not an annual cost, we just chose to do it now rather than have it be deferred maintenance and a more expensive problem later on down the line. |
| Paid $450. Put $15k. $12k for 2 bathrooms and we got ripped off about $3k on one of them with a bad contractor. Still need $120k worth of work. Old house that needs overhaul. |
