Recess First Then Lunch

Anonymous
Blessed Sacrament in DC is implementing recess first and then lunch for all grades. Anyone have a child in a school that has already done this? What has been your experience? I think it is a great idea.

My child's school did this last year--I think it went really well.

Makes sense to me since many kids are so hyped up from recess that it makes it hard to calm down and get back to work in the classroom. Plus the kids get to run off their energy earlier which would be great for my son who is dying to get outside by 11am everyday (but has to wait until 12:30 at school).

and I'd bet kids might eat better after working up an appetite and not being so eager to get out to play.

This. I know my neighbor's son gets 40 mins for lunch and then recess. When the kids are finished eating, they are allowed to go outside. My neighbor said that her son hardly eats any of his lunch in the rush to get outside.

My dd's preschool does this (an hour outside and then snack) and it is amazing the food the kids put away after getting all that exercise and fresh air. I think it is a great idea.

Why doesn't everyone do this? It makes so much more sense. Do you think it's possible that some of the elementary schools in DC, Fairfax, or Montgomery might change?

I mean, public schools in DC, Fairfax or MontCo.

I think it's for crowd management purposes. Some of these schools are BIG and need to stagger lunch and recess to accommodate all the kids in a relatively short timeframe.

Actually, I think much of the positive research in this area is relatively recent. Several schools in Mont County are doing this currently. My guess is that the trend will continue in that direction.

Another positive is that some of the minor "issues" that occur on the playground end up getting "worked out" or forgotten at lunch so they don't carry over into the classrooms.
