A middle school parent told me she forbids her child from doing theater “because they all end up experimenting with drugs since theater attracts the ‘alternative’ types.” I was literally like “wtf” in my head. I thought theater attracted the nice/accepting kids, not ones who would go the drug route.
Is there any truth to this? have people seen this in FCPS middle and high school theater circles? |
| I wouldn't be surprised if it varies from school to school and from year to year. |

That mom is awful and insane.
There are both experimenters and XX kids in theater, sports, bands, etc. |
| No. Haven't seen this. The kids doing these things are more often not doing any activity after school. |
| OP you are absolutely hilarious. You think nice kids don't do drugs? Why? Nice kids share drugs |

Theater kid who went on to major in theater in college. I've worked off and on as an actor for years and have many, many friends in the industry here in DC.
That comment is ridiculous. If anything, the theater kids are bit less precocious when it comes to things like drug use than some other groups. |

| My kid said theater kids at her HS school have weed trading around. |
| Boy will this parent be shocked when she learns that athletes, honor students, and the techies also use drugs. Many teenagers experiment regardless of their social group. Wait until she finds out that so many of them also drink. |
| yes |
That line was amazing. |
+1 Excellent point. Kids of all kinds, OP. The minute you stereotype, you miss another group. |
| It varies by school but at ours the jocks are the drinkers and druggies. Theater is straight edge and not really into drugs except caffiene |
| The theater kids at our school are definitely into drugs and alcohol. |
| Can you please name the schools when you’re referring to specific groups at your school? |
