Cash or check only restaurants

Anonymous
I met a friend for breakfast this morning. He offered to pay. When I sat down, I noticed written on a dry erase board, “We accept cash or check only.”

I had cash in case he forgot he had offered to pay, but it was probably the first time I had been to a cash only establishment in awhile (that was not a dispensary). I was also in shock they still took checks.

Their policy didn’t seem to affect their sales as they were packed with a waiting line.

Have you been to other cash only establishments.

No, it isn't. It's the surcharge that the credit card companies charge back to the business. This is why you will often be offered a 10% discount if you pay by cash or check. Every business loses at least 10% off the top when they accept credit cards.

I haven't carried cash in 10 years and don't carry my checkbook with me.

Never heard of checks but the cash is so they don't have to pay credit card fees or to hide it.

Not recently, but I’m glad to see it. I’ve had a couple of bad experiences with places that I learned the hard way did not take cash — something that should have been mentioned on their website and, ideally, on there front door or somewhere prominent prior to the point of ordering.
I’m told that the credit card fees have been increasing— although since people paying with cards often spend more, perhaps it’s still an overall positive for some places.

A Vietnamese place near me only takes cash.
I think they hide a large amount of it, and/or pay their illegal workers in cash.
I am surprised it’s actually allowed for a restaurant to not accept credit cards. But I don’t care either way.

That could be but that's racist. It's usually because the credit card companies are charging 10% to the restaurants for usage.

It just happens to be a Vietnamese restaurant!
When I come across an Italian or an American one doing the same, I will suspect the same, I promise.
Not for a second I believe that a cash only place reports 100% of their cash.

Why are you surprised that this is allowed?

I am surprised more areas of the country have made it illegal for a business not to accept cash!

Nope. Those fees are part of doing business and factored into pricing of services.

A cash only business means you can’t trace the money coming in daily.

The fees are also not 10%. Try 1.5-3% https://www.bankrate.com/finance/credit-cards/merchants-guide-to-credit-card-processing-fees/
