Cleaning a rug

How do you clean a 8' x 10' rug? It's a yellow rug. There aren't any stains but it's looking dirty.

You need to determine what it’s made of (eg wool, nylon, etc) and you need to turn it over and see whether it’s attached to any kind of backing. Like is the underside burlap, or rubber, or can you see basically the reverse or underside of the same material that is on the top?

Those answers will determine how you clean it.

It has a burlap backing. The label says 100% polyester Pile hand hook.

The backing is really tough, because that means it can’t really be washed. But you can probably use an extractor, either a home one you can rent from Home Depot or giant or one on a truck you can hire like Stanley Steemer.

Not OP, but is it usually cheaper to just buy alone or those home carpet cleaning vacuums vs hiring it out annually? Or do they not work well enough to be worth it? No pets just regular soil from having kids and light area rugs

“Buy one of those …” (autocorrect)
