Can you drop a class mid semester?

If so, what happens? Does your first quarter grade become your semester grade? Or does it just show an I on your transcript? I’m assuming you can fill in the credit with a summer school class?

Discuss with counselor. If it is a class required for graduation (Math/English) you cannot drop, but could potentially find another level.

Not required to graduation.

I suspect you cannot get credit for the class if you just take one quarter. You could probably drop for a free period (I have heard a rumor that these exist) but the transcript will show a W with the grade at the time of withdrawal.

If you only complete the 1st Qtr your transcript will show a withdrawal and you don’t earn any credit. If you retake same course in summer, you have to complete entire semester. The grade will replace the W for withdrawal. Counselors won’t let you have a hole in your schedule in the middle of the day. Depending on circumstances, you could take a PE class, a resource class, or if a junior or senior have an abbreviated schedule to arrive late or leave early (the missing class is 1st or 7th period).

You could also drop to a lower level (if there is one). They typically use the 2nd quarter grade as the final semester grade in this case.
