Mid Year Move

Anonymous
Our lease will be up mi school year and we are contemplating purchasing a home. Ideally we’d find one in DC’s elementary school zone, or in the same middle school zone. We have a middle schooler and 5th grader. If we stayed in the middle school zone but out of elementary school zone would APS make DC transfer elementary schools in Feb/March?

In the past it has depended on the the school enrollment. If a school is overcrowded they may make you move. However Feb/March is after the verification process if they stay on the same timeline so there's really no way for them to know

By March, it’s too late for them to care/know, but if your 5th grader is a patrol, you may have to change their beat or drive to the bus stop.

I think there is a policy about this on the APS website.

My understanding was always that if you moved within Arlington you could stay at the same school that calendar year, as long as you provide the transportation. That may not be official policy, but unofficially, I think that is how it always works.

You should confirm with the front office at your school, but I’m pretty sure they’ll let you stay. If your school isn’t overcrowded you can get administrative transfers for subsequent years too as long as you provide transportation, but you don’t need it in this case.
