What is the point of elementary report cards

Anonymous
Report card came home today… and I’m not sure what the point is? They give no real information about what my kid has learned. Just a letter grade with no context. I guess that’s what the conferences are for but, seriously, what’s the point of these in ES?

its for parents to feel like they know their kid is doing well. obviously

It’s tell how your student is doing in a particular area of a particular subject plus learning skills. For more you should be looking at assignments that come home, how they are handling homework, and go to parent teacher conferences.

In first grade, the grades are P for proficient, I for in process and N for not yet. My second grader.s report card came today with all As and Bs. A is for consistently displays mastery of on grade level skills, B is for almost always displays mastery, C is for inconsistently and D for doesn’t display display mastery

Grades don’t ever tell you what a person has learned — it’s not like an A in high school chemistry is a great descriptor of knowledge and skills.

Are you seeing individual grades posted on ParentVUE and graded work come home?

They literally never give a first grader an A. Never.

Yes, they don't log tests and when you ask to see them they say they are unable to share so it sure seems like the grades are just made up.

I think this makes sense, I help out in lower grade classroom weekly, there are many kids struggling with reading, writing, even finishing work that assigned to them. You see big variety of learning skills. So not everyone is graded with P. We are a moderate farm rate school, and many kids receive enrichment outside of school, but they only makes a quarter of the class who demonstrate P or A in all subjects.
