Omg! 900 bucks for a battery and cable!

We have a Ford Flex we have really liked under extended warranty.

On a 20 minute trip where I dropped off my kid, I turned the car off because it looked like it was going to be a wait. It would not turned back on. Completely dead. We called and the dealership told us to have it towed in.

They call back and say the battery is bad for sure and will run diagnostics on the rest.

They call back and say there is also a bad cable, and to replace it all it is almost $900! $600 is labor of 2.5 hours.

Car dealers? You SUCK!

Wouldn't you like to make over $300/hour to change a battery and a cable? I would!

Call AAA and they come to you and replace the battery. The Ford Flex is an off the shelf battery not something special. I doubt the terminal cable needs replacing.

Because it looked like more than a battery.

We did have AAA tow it to them, where we had a bumper to bumper warranty, except for tires and battery.

I've always gotten the best service at the dealer.

To be transparent, I grew up with a dad who was a tow truck driver. I spent a lot of my childhood riding with him in his truck during the summer and/or hanging out in the shop office. My dad was an honest guy, but holy bleep were the mechanics at the shop total sleazeballs. They definitely cheated and scammed most customers. The service writer had different prices for everyone. If you looked like you had money or had a luxury car, you got charged much higher parts and labor prices.

The key was to do do very good, legit, up-and-up service to establish a relationship so that when they started hitting you with the scammy repairs and prices the customer wouldn't question them because they were such good people! Such a good shop! Always take care of me!

Not for me, dawg. I stopped taking my hand-me-down car there after my dad retired. And my new cars have only ever gone to the dealer.

If you're going to buy a Ford, get it from Ted Britt Ford. Ted Britt 4 Life is fantastic. It's bumper-to-bumper for the vehicle lifetime.

My partner is a big Ford truck fan (not my favorite brand, that's for sure) but he's paid very little out of pocket during the last almost 3 years he's owned a new truck from there.

I have an airbag issue and no other mechanics will touch it. The dealer wants $3000, for a $700 part and labor. Oh, and it might not fix the problem.

not related to cars, but this is the same thing we are finding with plumbers. DH's friend who doesn't know anything about plumbing was quoted $700 for something. He asked DH, who is very handy at home, and DH said that the job sounded like a 15min job with a $20 part. He took a look at the issue, found a spare part he had at home, and fixed it within an hour.

However, cars are becoming much more complicated and all electrical. It was easy to replace a burnt out light bulb in an older car. I could do it myself on my old car in like 30min. Today, it takes a mechanic and $500. Why? Because car manufacturers have put the light bulb in places that are not accessible unless you have the right equipment to get to it. And it also takes longer. DH changed a bulb on a 2010 GMC, and it took him a long time to do it.
