Feedback on Saturday School?

Does anyone have feedback on Saturday School for elementary-age kids?

My son is in second grade and is struggling with reading and writing. We’re considering Saturday school and called for more information, but haven’t received a call back yet.

Are they strict with attendance? How big are the classes? Do the kids get individual help specific to their needs or is it more of a generalized class?

I didn't want to leave your post unanswered. Is there a reading specialist at your kid's ES, that might be the first place to look because they will work with him and tailor what they do according to his strengths etc.

The only time I heard about Saturday school was when my kids were at Whitman, it was a HS level service.

Saturday School is at all levels. It is a nice weekly boost. Just know that it isn't a one to one tutor but they say they get results according to the data they shared.

What data? When? Where?

It's a place for MCPS teachers to get extra pay and kids to be parked. It's part of MCPS but no accountability, no oversight. MCPS pays for the principal, the classrooms and much of the salary for the teachers yet they still charge parents to send kids there. It should be free as it is funded by MCPS.

It’s a sliding scale. Incredibly affordable. Like $80 for the year max. I don’t know much about it but I was looking at it for math support before we switched my son to a different math.

DC is at Saturday school for high schoolers. It’s basically a study hall where they can do their homework and maybe get an SAT/ACT study packet if they want. There is a teacher but they may not be an expert in your kids subject area. But it’s totally worth it for us as it give DC a set time/place to study and the cost can’t be beat!

This. It is cheap and taxpayer funded, but no oversight. It’s not going to give you the results you want.

You would be much better off paying for a tutor or signing up for some sort of private tutoring service like Kumon or Spider Smart.
