We have a couple friends whose DDs didn't get offers last weekend and really want to develop skills as much as possible this Spring. Most of them are U14s or U15s, a few U16s. Our own family is only 3 yrs into this but most of our friends are 1 or 2 yrs in this year, so they're asking us for advice.
I assume anyone who is club-less right now has 3 possible options for skill development: 1. Play on a Rec Team 2. Do clinics regularly (how regularly are they offered in spring?) 3. Pay for private coaching Are there other options I didn't list? What are your opinions on the best way to truly work on skills? Which DC-accessible Rec clubs are worth signing up for b/c they actually develop the skills of their players? Thank you for all advice! |
For my daughter, it was finding a league that was better than the local rec option, where none of the kids were beginners. She was still part of a team and got coaching that way. It depends where they live. For us, she played last spring in NVVA’s spring league. She went to their skills clinics over the winter. |
I would consider VA Elite training during winter and spring. https://www.vaelite.com/winter-spring-training https://www.vaelite.com/setting-academy https://www.vaelite.com/serve-receive-academy https://www.vaelite.com/powercore-360 |
Regular trainings and join those weekend adult open gyms. |
Don’t do a Rec league. Full stop. |
Go to NVVA and look at their different programs
|
Thanks everyone, appreciate ALL of this advice! Still reading too, will tell my friends to check out NVVA and VA Elite, and also would love names of any other clubs you guys feel are good that are as close to NE DC as possible.
THANK YOU! |
Hi, a lot of this is new to me - where are the "weekend adult open gyms" you mention? |

No Panic has this Pink Shirt Academy. Keep checking the website or email the club director to find out when to sign up for the next session. https://www.nopanicvolleyball.com/program/pink-shirt-academy-11-15/1456 |
You can also suggest them to sign up on this free agent list. https://www.vaelite.com/free-agents |
NP In Arlington, a different community centers has volleyball set up (using the men's net though) each night of the week. I don't know the latest schedule except TJ Community Center is Friday nights. The level of play can be quite high. My DD can't play club because of basketball, and she goes often. |
Thanks again everyone, really appreciate all these ideas! Forwarding them all, and will also keep checking back in case anyone adds more. |
This was posted in the other volleyball thread. See below.

Ask a club if you can be a practice player. Some take players as part of practices only but they can’t play in tournaments. I don’t know which ones do, my DD is only 11 but at tryouts one of the coaches mentioned that you can ask clubs if they do that. |
