OK, please help me here.. Tech's first supplemental question is about community (Share how you contribute to a community that is important to you). DC has been working with an essay coach who has advised DC to write about their involvement with Band (4+ years) but there's no charitable giving involved as part of that. I see this as an extracurricular activity.
DC also does community service (food banks, church, etc.) over the past 3 years and I think this is what DC should write about (since it addresses the "how you contribute" part). Who's right? If I'm wrong, what's with all the "Tech cares about community service" chatter I keep reading here on and off? |
|
I would write about the community service, be specific about an experience that shows how you had an impact.
VT's motto is "that I may serve." Community service is very important to them. |
| DC should take their lead from the question. It asks about a community that is important to them. Which is more important to them, band or community service? |
OP. Band. If possible, they'd like to do something similar in college. My concern was the lack of 'service' though.. Is that not an issue? |
I'd say band is a service to the audience. Entertaining. We need all types to make this world a better place, not just people who serve soup to the poor. |
| Have the band ever taken themselves to old people's homes and similar places to directly benefit the public? |
| “Contribute to a community that is important to you” is entirely different than “community service”, ie volunteering. Write about band. |
Nope. They mostly play at games and at competitions. |
| Since there are four questions I'd think about where would make most sense to talk about both band and community service across those questions. I'd think they could both potentially fit in how you contribute to a community or how you show leadership. |
| I’d write about band |
| Does the band participate at parades. for example, Veteran’s Day, etc? |
The question isn’t about service. Why would that be an issue? |
But the question is about being a member of a community and contributing to it. OP’s kid isn’t a member of the community they do a one off performance for. They are a member of the band community, and need to write about their contribution to that community. |
Yeah, those are two different things. OP, are you not understanding the actual essay question?! |
+ 1 OP, I think this is a reading comprehension fail on your part. |
