Driving classes?

My eldest is soon to be 16, we live in DC.

What did you do? teach the kid yourself? Take a class: how much was it?

Yes, we taught. Someone just posted something similar but I forget which thread. There were a lot of good ideas. But, basically, start in an empty parking lot. When you feel like he is ready to move to the road. Recommend early mornings when no one is about. Expect to guide him through things like lane changes for awhile. And, then just keep practicing. Also, if your alley is wide enough, put trash cans or cones out to practice parallel parking.

We did exactly what PP suggested, though we did also sign up DS for a couple lessons with CAS. I’m not sure they helped that much but there is an option to do a practice driving test with them, which I think seems really helpful.

Do they first need some form of permit to drive with you?
Also do you need to add them to the insurance?

Technically, yes.

Not with a Learner's Permit, but when they get their Provisional License, yes.

I'm in MD, so an official drivers ed class is required, but for cost ours was about $400-$500 when my daughter took it in the summer.

We did 30 hours of drivers Ed classes first so teen is aware of all the road rules and traffic safety first.
