I’ve noticed over the last year I’ve gained 15 lbs and it tracks exactly when I got my Mirena in. I went from 130 to 145 lbs. I noticed this on my medical charts. I’ve been eating healthier than ever and working out daily. I don’t need birth control because my DH has a V and we are done with having kids. I only got it implanted to stop periods.
A few things I’ve noticed over the course of the year is I seen puffy and swollen. I’ve had 2 kids and my breasts seem very similar to when I was pregnant/nursing, just really full overall. I got pregnant really easier with both, no pcos, and while normally a decent weight ballooned up during pregnancy, had mild and controlled gestational diabetes … it’s almost like my body don’t tolerate hormonal changes well. What would you do in my situation? Do you think the weight could be from the Mirena or even just retaining water?? I’ve tried dieting several times and my body is really resistant to weight loss. I’ve had absolutely no fluctuation in weight in the last 15 years. 5 lbs max. |
| Have you checked your HbA1c? Are you at the age for perimenopause? |
| I am 41. I was a late bloomer so I would be surprised if I was early to start but I’m not sure how that all works or if it correlates. What is HbA1c? I just got a ton of medical testing and nothing came up! My doctor said bc I have an iud, I can’t test for hormones because it would be impacted by the artificial ones of the iud. |
| I didn’t notice much weight gain on mirena but loove the lack of periods. It would still be worth it to me, but your line will vary. |
| I'm on my 3rd Mirena and have no weight gain. Also no migraines anymore. |

Honestly if you’re 41 you’re probably just in the same f$&ed up perimenopause boat as the rest of us.
I had a Mirena in my early 30’s and now I have one at 40 after kids and everything is completely different. I don’t think it’s the Mirena. I have other symptoms of perimenopause so I’m reasonably confident it’s that. But if you’re willing to use other BC, I see no reason not to take it out and give yourself a six month reset and see how you feel. I would do at least that long before starting a new hormonal BC because then you’ll have something of a baseline. At least chat with your doctor about it. |
This. I'm 49 and thinking about getting Mirena (or other BC) for the first time in a long time. |

I just got a Mirena at 44 and have not gained weight on it. However, from 40-44 I gained about 15 lbs that I have had to work incredibly hard to get off and keep off over the past 6 months. I lost 10 of the 15th a before my Mirena, and the last 5 after.
So my vote is perimenopause vs Mirena. |
| I’d definitely try removing it. It is not agreeing with you. |
| Hormones from the IUD do enter your bloodstream. It is a smaller amount but different people react differently. |
I don’t know… Unplanned pregnancies can also make you gain weight. I would talk to your OB/GYN but OP you probably still need birth control at 41. I’m not seeing in the medical literature Mirena leading to that much of a weight gain. Did you have a full thyroid panel and that was completely normal? |
| I've been on Mirena for 10 years. No weight gain. It's not the mirena. It's age. Yes it sucks. |
Her husband has had a vasectomy |
| I gained 10 lbs when I had a Mirena. Everyone reacts to differently to different birth control, so I don't know why people are telling you it's not the IUD. Once I had the Mirena removed I lost the 10 lbs within the first month. It was nearly all water weight. |
Yes but I have been on Synthroid for 8 years and always maintained a weight with a 5 pound range. I’m not pregnant- IUD and my husband has a vasectomy. |
