Assume we have 2 (otherwise identical) students:
Student A has taken Algebra 1 at 7th Grade and got A- in the final report card. Student B has taken Math 7 HN at 7th Grade and got A in the final report card. Which student has a stronger TJ application? Based on my understanding from the admissions criteria, it is student B? |
Yes |
There's no difference. |
OP here. What do you mean? PP 21:19 said that B's is better.. And afaik GPA counts in TJ applications.. |
+1 |
First quarter grade in math in 8th grade is what matters. |
That makes sense because math level is more a reflection of whether they attended a high-SES or low-income school instead of intellect. |
The kids attending a high SES school who still didn't qualify for Algebra in 7th are not penalized, though. It would make sense to consider math level within a MS for the allocated slots. The kids attending a low SES school who take Algebra in 7th should get a boost. Those kids are likely amazing. Likewise, the Longfellow and Carson kids who don't take Algebra until 8th grade are completely average and not at all TJ material. |
Along with the grade in 7th, AFAIK... it's not just one or the other. |
I like this idea. It doesn’t penalize kids coming from schools that have less parental involvement/enrichment but recognizes the schools were kids are more likely to be ahead. Essentially it is an application of the College idea of most rigorous course of study for a specific school. |
It is what matters. Both kids would have a year of math at middle school by the time they apply and if that first quarter grade isn’t an A, no chance. |
