Did your baby sleep in a crib from the beginning? We're trying to figure out whether we should go ahead and get the crib and use it from the start vs. starting with a co-sleeper, and then moving to a crib? |
There's a huge range on this...some babies will be okay with a crib right away and some need a more snug space while some parents want the baby in the room with them (I think the AAp recommends 6 months of this) and some want the baby in the nursery. We wanted to start in the crib, but our baby wouldn't have it, so we had her in a cradle for 5 months then moved up to a crib. It's a preference thing (the first of many!) where the baby's preference trumps yours. |
Our DD was fine in the hospital bassinet (2 nights) but the first night home we tried to put her in the crib and she wouldn't have any part of it. We were beside ourselves. Reluctantly we brought her into our bed - we (especially me) needed some sleep. Fortunately after the first night it's been (knock on wood) great since and she'll be 10 weeks on Monday. She loves her crib, will sleep up to 6 hours at night (on breast milk) and will even go in her crib awake at times and fall asleep after about 10 to 20 minutes. We are truly blessed but I think it can vary for everyone - depends on the child and parents. Best of luck! |
Our DD was fine in her crib from day 1. For us, it worked out just fine. DD was so new to the world that she didn't really know any better.
We just swaddled her and let her sleep in the crib in her room and to here it is 10 mo. later and no sleep/co sleep issues (knock on wood) ...also saved space and money by not having to buy a bassinett ...one note, we didn't skimp on a crib mattress. We bought a good quality one so that may make a difference in DD's no-fuss sleeping. |
My son slept swaddled in his swing for the first ten or twelve weeks--he liked to be cozy, and he slept better at a slight incline. I was completely paranoid that we'd never break him of the habit and eventually have a sixteen-year-old dangling off the swing at night because it was the only place he could sleep. So, every three or four days I'd try the crib for naps and at night, and at about thirteen weeks he took to it, and has been there ever since. |
If you think it would work for you better to have the baby in the crib from day 1, give it a try! Our DD started in her crib (swaddled) in her own room on the first day home from the hospital and we have never had problems with this.

It just depends on each baby, not whether they are new to the world and don't know any better. Each of my three children expressed their opinions on where they slept for the first few weeks of life. I didn't sweat it...there was plenty of time to transition them to the crib after they were teeny tiny newborns. |
I wish I had gotten the co-sleeper for my son. He didn't like the crib or the bassinet. I find it easier in the middle of the night after a feed. I think there would be no harm in trying it before investing in a crib. |
My first child co slept until about 8 weeks, then went to a crib, no problem. We had a bassinet in the room but I found cosleeping more convenient. My 2nd, now 5 weeks has been co-sleeping with me. I bought a co-sleeper but she has not made it in there yet. It's just so much easier for me to have her in bed so I can BF without really waking up. I use the co-sleeper to hold supplies. We have a crib for #2 and will probably move her there around 8-12 weeks, once she's sleeping long enough so I only have to get up once at night. |
