Recommend in home care - Alzheimer’s

Anonymous
The time has come for in home care for my parent, who has Alzheimer’s. We’ll definitely get input from the doctor on needs. But does anyone have providers that they’d recommend?

TIA

We are currently using one I don't recommend but because we are still using them and would be screwed if they left I cannot share their name. We had much more success with FIL going to a Memory care because he was safe, had activities (still enjoyed being social) and could not wander away or harrass neighbors.

A word of caution when you hire a service to manage all care...parent was already reluctant to ever consider memory care, but the stories they shared made it sound worse than a prison which is not the experience any one we knows parents had. So now we have a parent who is miserable at home, harasses neighbors, throws tantrums with doctors, etc and when I share it with the person managing care I get push back. "Well I will need to know the name of the neighbor who complained so we can discuss it and that neighbor needs to speak with her directly." Um...people are afraid of her and they tell her to stop doing what she is doing.

So, please do spend some time researching facilities if you loved one has any antisocial or abusive tendencies.

That said, we do have a family friend who aged at home well with caregivers from a local agency. We used that agency some before having a care manager take care of things, but it's a revolving door when you have a difficult parent and none of the same staff are there who this older woman had. She was extremely pleasant with Alzheimer's, her daughters were happy to check on things and see her and neighbors enjoyed visiting. She had a sense of community where she was because she was a kind and loving person who remained that way through the aging process.
