SAT advice

DD scored a perfect 1520 on the new digital PSAT/NMSQT in October. She took the old paper SAT back in August and scored 800 in math and 770 verbal. Is it worth taking the new digital SAT in spring 2024 to see if she can improve her verbal score given the new format? Or just be one and done? She’s had zero prep other than taking each test one time, and wouldn’t be doing any even if she tests again.

Does a 1570 vs. a possible 1600 even matter?

These questions get sadder as time goes on.

Leave it up to her. Junior year is such a grind that sometimes one more test is actually too much. If she were to take it, I would recommended the August test or June (if her school year will be done by then).

Nope, it doesn't matter. I would be one and done and focus time on improving something else like essays.

I'm sure some schools will view a candidate with NMSF / NMF designation with a 1570 as greater than or equal to a candidate with a 1600. That said, I mean, 1600 vs. 1570 might make a difference for some AOs.

I think so. Even for kids who get 1600 it is a good idea to take it again to show that you can repeat the results.

Thanks for the chuckle PP!

PP is being silly. If you score a 1600 you obviously take the ACT instead of repeating the SAT. DCUM.

Thanks for the second chuckle PP!

1550 and above -- just STOP. Repeating tests to get an improvement from 1560 to 1580, or whatever, is a signal that your are focusing on the wrong thing. In this range, it just does not matter. The box is checked. Move on to other aspects of the application.

I normally don’t post snarky comments, but is this a humble brag?!?

How would it be, unless it's actually the kid posting it? Given it's the parent, it's pathetic.

No, OP, and it’s sad that you are even considering having her retake.

Three times the charm.

3 back-to-back scores of 1600 should get you into your top choices, no problem.

That perfect PSAT score makes her eligible for tons of scholarships if that matters to you.

Otherwise, of course she shouldn't retake a 1570
