| My mom passed in early 2023 and was a passionate gardener. She lived in DC and owned a small plot of land behind her house (bordered by alleys - can not be built on). A part of the land has a veggie garden area that my dad isn't able to maintain. He is happy to supply water and tools - does anyone know how to create a community garden in DC? I have reached out to DPR but am looking for other ideas/resources. I'm talking about a space that easily accommodate 5 or 6 raised beds (larger ones are already built but it could be portioned). |
I would get in touch with people who've successfully started them elsewhere in the city and ask what their process was like. This seems to be a hub for info about all the ones that are out there: https://dcgardens.com/community-gardens/ |

What a sweet idea! Here are some resources:
https://sustainableamerica.org/blog/how-to-start-a-garden-share/ You could also ask around on your neighborhood email list or Facebook or next door to get contact information for your nearest community garden. Some have wait lists, so you could potentially ask to offer this spot to those on the wait-list. If they were already interested enough to join that wait list they might be more motivated than just some random person on a whim who will let weeds take over. Or ask direct neighbors. I want to garden more vegetables but don't have sun. Our community garden is not close enough, but I would love to tend a sunny bed next door and would happily give produce and flowers to the owner. |
| I've no clue but sending my best wishes for success of this fabulous idea. May be social media and local newspapers can help. |

| OP this will be a nightmare to manage. Just find one gardener or food nonprofit and come up with a lease. You don’t want to be involved in governing a community garden. |
