June vacation with 5th grader

Anonymous
Looking to take about a 4-5 night trip in mid-late June with our 5th grader. Thinking of somewhere beachy but with other things to do like easy hikes/scenic walks, walking around towns, etc. We'll be heading out west later in the summer so prefer something closer to the east coast. Slight preference for rental vs hotel, but open to either.

I had initially been thinking somewhere in the Caribbean, but there are very few nonstop flights. Nonstops aren't required, but also don't want to spend a long time getting to the destination since we'll only be there 4 nights). I think Bahamas and Puerto Rico were the nonstop options. There are others that have a reasonable 1 stop option, maybe Grand Cayman? The other thing I want to avoid that I read a lot about last year is sargassum.

Bermuda has a nonstop flight which is quite short so very appealing, and presumably sargassum isn't an issue, but I also keep reading it's a formal island and we are definitely not formal. I also can't really tell if there would be enough things to do with a kid.

Another option is to just stay continental US, Hilton Head or something.

Where would you go in June in similar circumstances? Open to other suggestions! It doesn't have to be a beach, but I think looking for something more relaxed than "go go go."

What about Tampa/Clearwater? There’s a great Busch Gardens if you get sick of beachy stuff.

or Cape Cod or Martha's Vineyard. And if you go immediately after our schools get out in the DMV, you may catch a discount since MA schools dismiss about a week later. But book now.

HH and FL are fine for the months when it's a little cool here, but too hot and buggy in summer. And FL is very stormy then too.

Keep in mind that on Cape Cod, the ocean is usually too cold for swimming in June. Fewer sharks, though 😉

Maine or Cape Cod (Ocean's Edge in Brewster works well for families)

What about Nashville followed by a night or two in the Smokey Mountains? My 5th grader loves live music and it's lovely there in June.

Asheville? Obviously not beachy but could do some water activities like rafting or kayaking. Plus there's plenty of nearby hiking, walking or biking along the river, arcade museum, interesting artsy areas, skate parks, fun restaurants, and lots of airbnb/vrbo options in the surrounding area

Some would say it’s really hot.
