Help for nail picking

Anonymous
Anyone’s kids do this? Ds nails are so short and he can’t seem to stop. Any tips on how to help him that have worked for you?

Put bandaids on the fingers he uses to pick. Also notice when he does it, when bored, when stressed and try to add an alternative- finding something similar to the picking sensation - like a fidget you can pick at or putting Elmers glue on his skin and having him pick that off. Also, is he picking because there are hangnails that bother him? If so, moisturizing heavily and trimming those to prevent the process from starting.

On my kid, the bandaids would be off in .25 seconds.

Does the kid want to stop? Or are you battling that, too?

My kid has this issue too. He is 21. I used to say it would be better if he bit his nails, (and actually that’s what they look like). There are several remedies that work for biting nails, but I could never find any for picking. We tried gloves while he was watching TV but in every other circumstances, the gloves didn’t work. And it seems those were the times that he picked most.

And for us, no, he doesn’t care or want to stop.

We asked ours to stop. He did. He moved on to picking at his socks.
