How do you sort your books?

(And how many do you have?)

I sort mine (not sure the exact count, probably between 100 and 500, mostly physical) by genre then author last name within genre. Since easily 80% of my books are fiction, this functionally similar to sorting by author last name really.

I own about a dozen. I am a library girl. The ones I own are in two piles on a shelf in a closet. They are sorted in size order so they won't slide.

I only take two books out from the library at a time. One goes on my ottoman or on the floor and the other is on my bed.

You mean the stack sitting on my bedside table lol? I do about 99% audiobooks now.

I feel like you must have such a tidy mind based on this post alone!

We are in the 45-65, post-grad, high income category, and as the charts suggests, we own a lot of books. We sort like a bookstore sorts.

I sort them by size and keep genre books together. I dont understand those who sort them by color--though it does look neat.

Kind of like a library. I have a nonfiction section sorted into sports, crafts, history, biography etc. I have a travel bookcase. I have a classic novels section, a contemporary fiction section by author, foreign language novels by author (husband's collection), then a section of oversized art and photo books. Upstairs is a graphic novels book case. Recipe books are in the kitchen.

Do I need a clean out? Yes.

poetry together on one shelf, art books together, fiction and non-fiction sometimes mixed. my own books, that I've written also have a shelf.

Eh. We probably own 2,000-3,000 books. They are loosely organized by works related to professional concerns, non-fiction, and fiction (and within that, mystery, historical, scifi/fantasy, poetry, etc.), but then there's the ever-growing stack by my bed, and the books tucked in along the tip of other books on shelves, etc. Every once in a while I try to reorganize, but it doesn't stick for long.

By genre and language. One of these days I'll count them, but my best guess is around 1,500.

How do I organize them? Hypothetically, that's how.

I actually have a ton of very severe learning disabilities and untreated ADHD, so I try to make my surroundings very simple and tidy since my brain is such a hot mess.

Another library person. I probably own less than 100 physical books. Some of my favorite authors have their own shelves because they're been pretty prolific. The rest are organized loosely by genre.
