Looking for an enrichment class that will keep DS happy and engaged. He loves math but is not getting challenged enough at school (apparently). I don't have any problems with the school though. I am looking for recommendations for enrichment classes preferably online. Based on his approach toward problem solving, we think he could be a potential candidate for kangaroo and other competitions. We are not able to give him a lot of time due to full time work that also involves travel. I need something cheaper than RSM and Kumon but something that is engaging too. How much amount per month or per class/session would that be? |
Which grade? What's your budget? Kumon is only ~ $150 a month and if you want something cheaper ....
Anyway, since you want online and cheaper , maybe try Singapore math. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore_math There are online learning centers that teaches its curriculum. |
If you want cheap and engaging, then go with Beast Academy online. It's only $96 per year, and they have a free demo so you can check it out. https://beastacademy.com/online |
This. Great value for the money if your kid is motivated and can focus on an online program. For in-person I'm not sure how much cheaper you can get than programs like Kumon... maybe a HS student who tutors? |
Second Beast Academy. It's great, and from what I've been able to ascertain, it's good for those kids who really get math (not just teaching memorize and drill but actual underlying concepts and critical thinking)
Have you also considered non-math enrinchment? Honestly, I can't recommend Cub Scouts enough - one extra curricular activity which gets you exposure to a whole lot of different things, including STEM content, leadership/communications, service, outdoor skills/camping, etc. |
Cub Scouts is great for a lot of reasons. It does have an entire NOVA award that kids can work on that is STEM based. When kids are in fifth grade they can move to a Scout Troop. There are some great STEM based Merit Badge options. And if your are on the NOVA area you can look up STEM Scouts. It is a STEM based program that is only offered in the National Capital Area Council. |
