What are your Halloween candy policies? How much each day? For how long?

I have a 1st grader and this is the first year she’s really focused on her candy. In the past, we let her eat a few pieces for a few days and then she forgot about it. I’m wondering what others do? She wants to take a piece with her to school to have with her lunch every day…and she has enough to do that for the whole year, probably!

She generally eats well and we often have desserts so it’s not like I’m particularly uptight about candy…but I also want to set a good precedent for the coming years. Anyone have suggestions? Do you let your kids consume all of their candy? Do they have to pace themselves? At some point, do you make the remainder disappear? We live in a densely packed neighborhood so she has SO MUCH CANDY!

Ps. I did eat a Reese’s from her bag after she left for school, so maybe I just need to manage my own consumption and not hers.

Ds is in 5th grade. Halloween night he can have what he wants but usually it ends up being about 5 pieces. Then it's 2 a day. I don't think he's ever made it more than 2 weeks before he loses interest in the candy. Once his favorites are gone, the candy loses its appeal

My kids are older now, but I tended to be pretty liberal with the candy. Yes, I’d generally put a piece in their lunchbox. They had to ask me before they ate any, but if it wasn’t right before a meal and they’d been eating fairly nutritionally, I generally let them have a little. They also had a ton, and would nibble on it gradually through the year. When the next Halloween came along, we’d dump whatever remained and start fresh.

They eat it. That’s my policy. They get sick of it after a while but they eat what they want.

I have no idea how much candy my kid eats or when. I don’t particularly care. She eats plenty of healthy stuff too.

I have a first grader too. On Halloween night, he had as much as he wanted. I didn’t keep track but maybe 6-10 candies? He “donated” a few handfuls to our trick or treat bowl to give out to kids, and we filled another bag to donate items like gummies and lollipops that are terrible for teeth. He got to keep a few.

I packed candy in his lunch yesterday, but he didn’t want one today. He’s gone trick or treating in earnest the past three years and never finished his candy.

I would ask if she’s interested in donating any to troops of disadvantaged kids.

Then sure, she can take a piece to eat with lunch. It’s probably better to eat a healthy lunch and a piece or two of candy than eat a hot lunch provided by the state. I don’t know about your public schools, but our meals are awful nutritionally speaking.

Sorry that should say troops OR disadvantaged kids. Plenty of places are collecting this week.

I don't police it too closely, and eventually they forget about it. I don't let them take it to school because school asks for healthy(ish) snacks and specifically asked for us not to send candy in. So I blame that on the school rules.

We also donated some of it to Treats for Troops.

One a day for as long as they're into it. They generally forget after the Thanksgiving break.

Same.

As much as they want on Halloween, 4 pieces a day after that. Two at lunch and two after dinner.

My kids are 14, 11, and 8 and I just finally realized that it doesn't matter. I had no rules this year and notice no difference in behavior.

two or three pieces a day until they forget about it. 10 year old still forgets about it after a week or two.
