Why aren’t teachers off today?

Anonymous
None of the teachers I know are working today, and I know a lot of them! Before anybody thinks I’m blasting teachers why don’t they just give them the day off too?

They say it’s for grading, but from what I can tell from my kids, the grading is already done.

Everyone can work from home except first year teachers. Not sure what the point of your post is.

I hope ours are getting grades in, they're not done yet.

HS teachers may be writing LORs for seniors. The deadline for UMD is today.

+1 DC's HS teachers were emailing starting at 8 a.m. about LORs and grades. Elementary teachers are mostly off today and the MS and HS teachers who don't have grading.

Along with grading, they have a ton of end-of-quarter paperwork to do for special ed kids.

And all the late assignments that came in yesterday!

They have time for grading and planning. If they have already caught up on that( I don’t care if my kids’ teachers take the day off.

Planning also takes time, I'm so happy teachers have this duty free day so my kids can receive well planned lessons!

It's comp time for all the saturdays spent grading!

Grading is NOT all done for all teachers. There are always teachers who grade very late (a bad habit indeed), and teachers who need to grade summatives of the end of the quarter.

The end of the quarter was timed for All Saints' Day, as a convenience, so kids could recover from all that late night candy, and teachers could finish grading, fueled by Snickers. The adults are expected to deal with late night shenanigans like the grown-ups they are!

It is not just grading. We need to post report cards for all of our classes and there are a lot of steps to go through to make sure it is all done correctly. It takes time. The kids don’t get to see this part so they think everything is done when their grade looks final. Sometimes there are also some individual situations to deal with that take up time. Some of us also have college recommendations to finish. Also, quarterly reports on all IEP students. I also need to plan for Thursday and Friday. I assume ES and MS teachers have an easier load today

We have lots of ungraded assignments but a few teachers are caught up. It really sucks.

If you know a lot of teachers, why don’t you ask them straight up? What are they doing on a designated professional day!
