Executive Function Support @ Tilden MS

Anonymous
DS12 is in a small private school. We are zoned for Tilden MS and for a variety of reasons are considering making the switch. However, DS has executive functioning deficits and I worry he won't be adequately supported in a large public school environment. Does Tilden MS have supports in place for kids with EF deficits? Would he need an IEP to access them or would a 504 be sufficient?

probably better off asking in the special needs forum.

(Cue Tilden hate in 5...4...3...)

MCPS offers a resource class that students can take as one of their electives in middle school. We don’t have a 504 but requested placement in the class without issue.

Our NB child has an EF coach - we pay out of pocket. School does follow their 594, but it's not enough

Tilden has a program aimed at what used to be called Asperger's/high-functioning autism (program is ASP), which has given our 7th grader a ton of support and the program, imo, is very well run. However to qualify, one must have an IEP or 504 and go thru the process of meetings to determine if it is a good fit. Tilden is not our home school but we have been extremely happy with the support and services our child has received there.

With the chaos of any middle school that has that many kids, you're not going to be able to replicate the private school experience without specific supports outlined in an IEP or 504.

Can you explain more about this class? (Not OP)

It's instead of an elective, a free period where a teacher helps all the kids with homework assignments. They have it at all MCPS middle schools. But it means they can't take an elective (you don't get to take Resource instead of English or Math)

Resource is great at some school and with certain teachers and terrible at/with others. You need to check with parents at the school. Try the PTSA and see if someone can connect you with a special needs parent.
