When five doctors tell you not to worry...but symptoms persist...do you stop worrying?

Anonymous
I have seen the best in the field for a very niche issue (chronic pelvic pain syndrome) and had imaging done (clear).
The best they can say is that I can manage my issue with drugs (some with unsavory side effects) or PT. It is a "nuisance" but not dangerous.
I guess I feel frustrated, like, if it's not dangerous, why isn't PT helping? Why isn't it abating with time? I have never been sick before (I know, I am lucky!) and am used to taking a pill and moving on. This has been persisting for months with no end. I feel glum.

The meds I could take are pretty strong (gabapentin, Trospium, Lyrica?) and I am in no hurry. The more the symptoms persist the more the worry that something is "wrong" plagues me and I become stuck in a sad awful worry cycle. I am just venting. Should I press for more answers? Imaging? Just pretend my pain does not exist?

If 5 doctors told you not to worry and if you have done other tests to confirm, i'd not worry. I'd, however, see someone for your anxiety though

Having a chronic issue is unfun.

Are you the poster who always thinks she has ovarian cancer? Fwiw I have persistent pelvic pain that has been checked a few times and comes out clear. Honestly I just ignore it.

How do you treat it?

np - you just live with it or learn to ignore it. I am 60 and i can't remember any time in my life i was completely "pain" free.

How long have you been doing PT? If it's pelvic pain, are you seeing a pelvic floor PT, specifically?

PT can take time to work, or you might need a different physical therapist.

Are you a woman?

Several doctors in three different states told me my concerns were nothing or just migraines. Then finally another doctor did more testing to humor me. (I lost count of how many this was at that point.) He called me immediately when the results came back to schedule emergency surgery for a life threatening tumor. That was fun.

Statistically, doctors tend to minimize women’s health problems. And that goes double if you’re a minority.

I think if you've already seen the best in the field, you don't have any alternative besides stop worrying. There are limits to medical knowledge and you have currently reached those limits. I'm sorry. Chronic pain sucks.

Yes, I am a female, though the top doctors I have seen are also women who specialize in this.

Agree. I'm not a minority but former Gynecologist actually said "Sometimes my girls have imaginary a hed.". I then asked him how many daughters he had! I went to another doctor who put me in hospital immediately because he suspected a blood clot and it was confirmed.

Are you seeing a pelvic floor PT specialist?

Find a new pt. Pelvic floor specialist.

Also not a big box pt office.

Chronic issues suck. Should you worry that it is something more serious? Probably not. Should you worry that the doctors do not care? Yes. It is acceptable to the medical community that women are in chronic pain, because are pain is minimized. Heck, thanks to OxyContin, doctors are limited on what they can do for chronic pain even if the do care.

Sometimes pain will go away with time or at least you learn to live with it. I wish you luck.

Gabapentin is honestly not that strong of a med.
