DC Area soccer

Anonymous
DC Area has 6 mls next teams and bunch of ecnl teams. They cannot produce(develop) players for MD,VA,DC D1 teams (most of starters are international players).
it is a shame. I can see that most of the clubs build teams not develop players. Clubs want to win, not send players to D1/Pro etc because business model requires that.
Until it is fixed it is money grab. My son still likes soccer and play on the top team but sometimes I want him to switch to different sport and do not waste his athletic talent.
So much effort for potentially zero result.

I guess I feel differently. I don’t view club soccer as a transactional thing that is supposed to yield a result (D1, pro). It’s an activity my kid enjoys so I support it. Just as I would if they enjoyed playing an instrument or working on cars.

So which sport is different and develops players? Truly curious.

This is one of the best areas for basketball talent going to D1 and beyond in the US. That's one of many examples. But I think the driving factor is that our country's best athletes are inclined to play other sports and have better though still long odds of going full D1 playing football or basketball than playing soccer. To put it differently, you probably could not pay top athletes or their parents to do soccer instead of football or basketball. The best athletes are choosing among those and baseball as well.

Plenty of DA/MLSNext players from our area have played and gonad starting roles at Maryland and Georgetown, American, GW, UVA etc. plenty at Wake and Duke too. I’m not as familiar with ECNL, but I’m also not sure why you’re focused on kids who end up at regional D1s. A lot would prefer to be playing in other regions and are able to do so.

D1, 2, 3 and JUCO still big accomplishments.

This all may be true to an extent but if he is enjoying it and is passionate will he have the same passion for another sport? If you, as a parent, are doing this for a return, it is a miserable experience (most of the time). If you are in a support role to provide encouragement, then less so. Much easier to get him to study to become a doctor or something like that.

A lot of fiction to unpack here.

When, where, how, what ages are the kids universally tested to determine the "best athletes" and by which singular governing body?
If you look with open eyes at HS, college and professional football players, it's clear and obvious most don't have soccer required athleticism and physical build. Neither do a lot of basketball players.

1/5th of the NBA are foreign players including the last 5 years MVP's
Do we really need to say where many MLB players come from?

So if the "best athletes in America" avoid soccer (allegedly) for the other sports, why is there so much room for foreign players in NHL, NBA and MLB? (rest of world doesn't play football)

Respectfully, MLB is closer to golf than anything else. Basketball has maybe 20-25%. You are missing the lure of collegiate scholarships. If you have played football, you would know there are plenty of positions whose players would be terrific if properly developed in soccer. (OBJ anybody?) Same is true for shorter basketball players. Even taller ones like Sean Elliott and Grant Hill, who were good players in high school.

If you do not understand the vision, speed, strength, balance and agility of elite football players, you simply don’t understand athleticism. It’s not identical to the athleticism requires of most soccer players, but there are plenty of terrific football players who would be stellar scholar players, more than elite soccer players who could play football.

The empirical evidence for your narrative exists where? The data to substantiate your claims exist where?

You're saying every athlete good at one craft would automatically be excellent at another.

Who would be good at the required skillsets of football if they weren't trained and groomed for football?
Who would be good at the required skillsets of volleyball if they weren't trained and groomed for volleyball?
